Perception Check Counselling
I'm Anna, here to help you to explore your feelings in an empathetic and non-judgemental way.
What is counselling?
Counselling gives you a safe confidential space in order to explore your feelings, thoughts and circumstances with a trained professional. Counselling is not just for people who have diagnosed mental health conditions, it can be for anybody who wants to make a change in their life or explore their emotions.
As a counsellor I won't tell you what to do with your concerns but I will support you in working out the best path forward for you. There are lots of different modalities in counselling so if you do not benefit from one, it does not mean that all counselling will be the same experience. I've worked successfully in many varied ways to suit the person I'm working with, and find the best results come from finding that communication style that enables us to explore your concerns together.
What to expect from your first counselling session
If you haven't experienced counselling before, you may wonder what to expect.
I offer a free 30 minute introductory call over telephone or online. If you choose to do this first, there will be a brief talk about confidentiality and what information may need to be shared if there are disclosures made during the call.
I will then probably ask you about your own experiences or understanding of counselling and the reasons why you are wanting to access counselling. At some point I will also offer an explanation of the way that I work and talk you through the modalities I use, my personal style and give you an opportunity to ask any questions you may have. There will be no rush to decide during that call if you want to go forward with the sessions and you can contact me afterwards if you would like some space to consider. If you want to book a session, I will email you my counselling contract for you to read through.
During the first session, I will talk through the main points of the counselling contract, particularly confidentiality and answer any questions you have about the contract. I might also ask you about how you communicate and process information, for example, some people prefer to have things written down or to express themselves through drawing, other people may find having an item to fidget with useful in order to help them talk and others may prefer a structured approach to sessions with set tasks.
Depending on how long these conversations are, the rest of the session will be talking about the reasons you have come to counselling in more depth.
